2021-22 Unit Plan
Occupational & Life Skills

Mission Statement

This program is designed to provide quality education and vocational training for students at the basic skills levels in the areas of workforce preparation, job enrichment, and career retainment.

Program Description

The focus of the Occupational and Life Skills (OLS) Certificate Program is to prepare students for community integrated employment. Two separate certifications may be obtained through an occupation specific certification and a Butte College Certificate of Completion. Students who complete the program will have proof of competencies through these certifications to present to potential employers. This certificate program requires successful completion of 6 courses in the OLS 324-329 sequence.
Fall 2020, the OLS Program included two new classes for incarcerated students: OLS 340 and 341. These courses are interpersonal skills training courses and are in the process of becoming another certificate program. Due to the pandemic, these classes have not be offered yet.

Student Learning/Administrative Unit Outcomes

Students were enrolled in Spring 2020. They hadn't been assessed because the assessment usually occurs after Spring break. Immediately following Spring break students could no longer attend face-to-face classes because of the COVID 19 closure. Instruction immediately changed modalities to online instruction.

Standards/Goals for Student Achievement (Instruction Departments)

The Occupational and Life Skills (OLS) Program is still fairly new. Therefore, students have not had the opportunity to complete their certificate program. The OLS Program is currently being offered at Orland High School, and Chico Senior High School is currently considering adding the OLS Program to their course offerings as well.

While the chart indicates the years of OLS participation to be from 2016 to 2018, the year 2019 had higher participations rates. It has taken a few years to get the word out. The partcipation started to increase just prior to the COVID 19 shut down.

**The above chart did not have any rates posted on it.

The OLS 340 and 341 classes have not yet been offered for incarcerated students due to the COVID 19 closure. When we have face-to-face classes again, it is hopeful that more high schools will also offer the classes for dual enrollment.

Strategic Direction

The Occupational and Life Skills Program is committeed to fostering a culture of inclusiveness, preparing students for the workforce, collaborating with community partners, supporting and encouraging a pathway for further education, and closing the equity gap.

Program Review

The Program Review was included with the Community Partners in Education Program Review in Spring 2018.

Department Goals

1. Create an operating budget

2. Assist students with disabilities in completing their certification in an occupational area.

Future Development Strategies

Strategy 1 - Create a separate budget for the Occupational and Life Skills Program

Create a budget for a one time purchase of $10,000 for hands-on learning kits with curriculum that will provide a certification at the end of the learning module for the eight areas listed in OLS 329, in addition to other operating costs and supplies.

Initiatives
  • Modeling Sustainability
  • Enhancing a Culture of Completion and Goal Achievement
  • Supporting Student, Faculty and Staff Success
  • Using Data-Informed Processes for Continuous Improvement
  • Maximizing Resources to Support Student Learning
  • Enhancing a Culture of Equity and Inclusiveness

Supporting Rationale

The OLS Program does not have a separate operating budget. It is funded through the Community Partners in Education (CPE) budget for Instructional Service Agreements. The OLS certificate program is required to provide a certification in greenhouse and nursery operations, hospitality, irrigation, retail sales, small engine repair and warehousing for OLS 329. This course was designed to allow for kit learning for our student with disabilities. To purchase reuseable kits for each area of student would cost $10,000.00. The high schools could check them out to help high school students complete their certificate program.
